Ministry of Highways spokesperson Steve Shaheen says the Highway Hotline received nearly 13 million hits in the past year which is more than double the number of hits it receives in a typical year.
Shaheen says the Highway Hotline provides critical information in real time about road conditions and the several large weather events this past winter translated into a large number of road closures.
So far this April, the Hotline has had approximately 1,200,000 page views with the majority (935,000) of the hits during the storm last week.
The Hotline is updated 365 days a year and while weather conditions impacting highways will provide the majority of the information in the winter, he says residents will still find valuable information in the summer such as construction updates.
And Shaheen says for the trucking industry they also provide details on winter and summer weight season, as well as clearances for bridges and highways.
The Hotline has links to more than 40 stationary cameras across its entire transportation network, giving travelers a chance to see the weather conditions for themselves.
