The 41st Meewasin community clean-up campaign is underway. The campaign encourages organizations, groups and individuals to register in helping clean up the parks, streets and riverbanks with the Meewasin Valley.
CEO Andrea Lafond says last year through Loraas pick-ups alone, 3,847 kg in garbage and 1,020 kg of recycling material were collected.
Lafond is optimistic they’ll see an increase of volunteers after a lower turnout the past two years due to the pandemic.
“It’s been quieter with COVID, so about 1,700 (volunteers) a year. In past years we’ve seen an upwards of you know 10 to 12 thousand folks, especially once we get school groups back coordinating and doing those things so it can really vary, it’s very varied obviously with the pandemic but we’re hoping to see those numbers increase again.”
Lafond says the campaign officially runs from now until May 30th, although people are helping to clean-up the river valley all through the summer and into the fall.
“Typically we’ll have groups sign-up online, we’ll provide them with gloves and garbage bags to head on out and kind of instruct them to different areas throughout the Meewasin Valley where they can clean-up in the river valley.”
