In recognition of the National Day of Mourning, all City of Saskatoon facilities will fly their flags at half-mast for the day. The National Day of Mourning is held annually on April 28th.
In 1991, the day was officially recognized by the federal government and commemorates workers who have been killed, injured or suffered illness due to workplace incidents.
SFL is marking the Day of Mourning by calling for increased worker safety protections. The Saskatchewan Federation of Labour wants to see paid sick time for all workers; proper PPE for all workers; safe staffing levels in health care, education and public services; and increased fines and accountability for employers who fail to keep workers safe.
The SFL President says today is a somber day as the province remembers 31 people who died last year as a result of their work. Lori Johb says, “We must honour these workers and demand justice and accountability to make sure that all workers come home safe at the end of the day.”
