Almost a year after officially being exonerated by the Prime Minister, his family is repatriating what is described as sacred belongings of Chief Poundmaker.
Chief Poundmaker was known for speaking out against Treaty 6 and at the Battle of Cut Knife Hill stopped warriors from going after soldiers and killing them. Chief Poundmaker was tried for treason and imprisoned. He was released because of poor health but died a few months later in July, 1886.
Justin Trudeau made the trip to Saskatchewan last May 23rd to officially exonerate the chief and said on that occasion the government recognized during his lifetime Chief Poundmaker was not treated justly nor showed the respect he deserved.
The repatriation of a staff that belonged to Chief Poundmaker took place today at the Fort Battleford National Historic Site. Parks transferred a staff ascribed to Pitikwahanapiwiyin (Chief Poundmaker) from the collection of historical objects under their care to his descendants on May 4, 2022.
