Jane’s Walk Saskatoon Festival is back and after a two year hiatus thanks to COVID-19 it is live, with 20 live walks along with 10 virtual walks.
Jane Jacob was an urban activist who championed interests of local residents and pedestrians over a car-centered approach to a community and Jane’s Walks are held the weekend closest to her May 4th birthday.
Organizer Alan Wallace says Jane’s Walks Saskatoon is free and the walks are led by volunteers.
The walks cover a broad spectrum of interest from the West Industrial: Past, Present and Future which allows you to learn about one of Saskatoon’s least known neighbourhoods to a children’s walk, a variety of nature walks, a walk featuring downtown war memorials and a full list of self-guided/virtual walks.
Wallace says the walks are about an hour to an hour and a half in length and mask use is at the discretion of the participant. He says they occur across the globe for instance in 2017 there were 1,700 Jane’s Walks, in 225 cities across 37 countries.
“An informal, volunteer led, walking conversation is what these things are. It’s to discover unseen aspects of communities, talk about interesting places in Saskatoon. There’s no better way to see a city and experience a community than to walk in it.”
