New regulations are being proposed for east riverbank areas that could have slope instability. The City has identified 2 zones with existing ground conditions that could cause challenges.

Kara Fagnou, Director of Building Standards, says the regulations provide options for owners to continue development while maintaining, to the extent possible, the integrity of the riverbank. The City will continue to monitor the east and west riverbank slopes for instability.

What it means is if the regulations are approved and you own a building on the east bank in an area that has been identified, before you do any work, you will need to hire a geotechnical engineer to support whatever construction and development you are looking to do. That could mean decks or garages or something more major like building a home, retaining walls or a swimming pool.

These reports are already required for subdividing and rezoning property on the east riverbank.
