The Nature Conservancy of Canada is encouraging Canadians to support local biodiversity by planting native species in their yards and planter boxes.
The NCC says there are tons of lawns in Canada with about 6.2 million. If one-by-one, each lawn converts bits and pieces of their space to foster native species, then collectively the NCC says we can give local nature a huge boost.
Sarah Ludlow with the NCC in Saskatchewan says it’s easy to plant native species even if you live in an apartment. “Somethings you can do are have plants in containers, so have a container garden, whether that be one really container with a bunch of plants in it or a whole bunch of little containers, just as long as you’re providing flowers for the pollinators so that’s going to be bees, butterflies, certain types of flies that act as pollinators and if you some types of flowers, they may attract certain types of birds as well.”
“No Mow” and “Slow Mow May” have been tried by many people over the past couple of springs. This is an initiative to encourage homeowners to ease up on the mowing and leave lawns long to help pollinators get started in the spring.
