The Mayor of Saskatoon feels the road to easing the rift and disconnect between western Canada and the Federal Government can be paved through honest and constructive dialogue.
Charlie Clark says his discussion with the Prime Minister about western alienation included Bill C-69. The legislation is viewed in the west as roadblock to major project development including the construction of pipelines.
Clark says he advised Justin Trudeau to consult officials in smaller municipalities who are more affected by legislation like Bill C-69. Trudeau is also planning to speak with Regina Mayor Micheal Fougere. Clark thinks First Nations leaders should be included in the conversation.
Clark says he has also spoken with Premier Scott Moe about a multi-jurisdictional approach to improving the relationship between westerners and Ottawa.
The mayor says the conversation with the Prime Minister was encouraging noting Justin Trudeau didn’t give pat answers.
