Nine people have been arrested following a collaborative investigation into catalytic converter thefts. With the Support of SGI, officers from various police Units including Break and Enter, Patrol and the General Investigations Section, an investigation into the rise in thefts of catalytic converters began.
Eight people were arrested in separate incidents and face 43 charges in total that include theft of the converters, possession of break and enter tools, possession of a controlled substance and possession of a forged document.
Police executed two search warrants in May – one at a home in the 600 block of Central Avenue and at a business in the 2000 block of 60th Street West. From these searches, police says 66 catalytic converters were seized, along with financial documents and various electronic equipment. A 30 year old Saskatoon man is charged with possession of stolen property for the purpose of trafficking and possession of the proceeds of crime. According to data from SGI, claims of converter thefts have increased from 29 in 2019 to 410 year-to-date this year.
