Saskatoon Police say that single vehicle accident with injuries that has been tying up 22nd Street and Confederation Drive started as a vehicle theft in progress at 3 a.m. this morning in the 100 block of Avenue O South.
Officers tried to pull over a vehicle matching the description given, at 22nd and Avenue R South, but the truck sped away. A tire deflation device was successfully used at 22nd and Circle Drive and then the truck ended up driving over a median and into a concrete support.
A 16 year old Saskatoon girl was taken to hospital by Medavie Health Services West with serious but non-life threatening injuries. She was the only person in the truck.
The Collision Analyst Unit is expected to be on scene for several hours. The Major Crime Section is investigating the circumstances of the incident with oversight from two independent observers appointed by the province.
Traffic is restricted to one lane for westbound traffic on 22nd Street and closed completely for both northbound and southbound traffic on Confederation Drive between 22nd Street and the entrance to the Confederation Mall.
