So far so good for the new Prince Albert Community Policing Unit.
Constable’s Ron Meyers and Derek Simonson have been patrolling areas like the downtown and dropping in on schools since the early fall.
Their job is to interact with residents and students giving the force a public presence in a non-threatening atmosphere.
Meyers and Simonson have had do so some policing.
They ended up arresting a La Ronge man they had stopped riding a bicycle along a downtown sidewalk and discovered he was wanted on warrants and the bike was stolen.
Simonson says those looking to cause trouble aren’t happy to see them but otherwise reaction from around the community has been positive.
Meyers recalls their random visit to the Riverside School Halloween dance.
He says teachers, students and parents first wondered why two police officers showed up, thinking there was a problem. Once assured they were just visiting, Meyers says it turned into a fun event with a spontaneous photo op with young students.
Simonson points out the community policing model has come and gone in the past but hopes this unit is around for years to come.
