The City of Saskatoon says the W.W. Ashley Park dry storm pond system exceeded expectations on Monday afternoon when up to 75 millimetres of rain fell over certain parts of the city.

In a news release, the City says the pond which was completed last fall, performed exceptionally well by preventing water damage to about 37 neighbourhood homes that typically experience flooding during intense rainfalls.

The City says the storm pond was designed to handle a 1-in-10 year rain event but accommodated a storm closer to a 1-in-25 year rain event.

Construction on a dry storm pond in Churchill Park is currently underway. It’s expected that will completed later this year.

A report on the City’s rain event response will be presented to City Council on Monday. According to the rain gauge at Aden Bowman Collegiate, approximately 65 millimetres of rain fell during the afternoon last Monday.
