It was 30 years ago today (Mon) that Wanuskewin opened to the public and on that day the opening ceremonies included First Nations singing, dancing and drumming. Wanuskewin is a Cree word which means “seeking peace of mind”.
Dr. Ernie Walker, Chief Archaeologist, USask Faculty member, and original and founding board member of the park says, “Wanuskewin is an archaeological goldmine, rich in sites that tell the story of early life in the Opimihaw Creek Valley, with finds in the area taking us as far back as 6,400 years. For thousands of years, this valley was a magnet that pulled people from thousands of miles away to one concentrated area.”
He calls it an unparalleled archaeological resource and says they have only scratched the surface.
