The high cost of gas may have you re-thinking your summer road trip plans, but if you do decide to hit the road for the Canada Day long weekend, SGI has some advice to keep you save, and as a bonus, save you money. In a news release, SGI advises drivers to slow down, plan ahead to be more efficient with your mileage, keep your car well maintained, accelerate smoothly, and if you may be in any way impaired at some point, plan a safe ride home or just stay the night.
Spokesperson Tyler McMurchy points out that it’s estimated for every 10 km/h over 90 km/h you travel, you use ten per cent more fuel, but he adds that slowing down can also save you an expensive ticket. The tickets start at $170 for 10 km/h over the limit, and they cost more if you are speeding through a construction zone, school zone or passing workers on the side of the road. Also, using cruise control can help with fuel efficiency.
Last weekend, there was a ceremony and candlelight vigil in honour of those killed in impaired driving crashes. The Saskatchewan Monument for Victims of Impaired Driving was erectedon the grounds of Saskatoon City Hall in 2019 and is etched with the names of 57 people killed by impaired drivers with two more names being added this year. The annual ceremony included a candleight vigil.
