According to available SGI data there has been 316 bike crashes the past five years in Saskatoon, with 238 resulting in injury. To lower this number SGI is asking cyclists to take the necessary steps in order to stay safe.
Tyler McMurchy, Manager of Media Relations at SGI suggests that before getting on your bike, you should ensure everything is working properly; checking the breaks, tire pressure, and ensuring you have reflectors especially for at night. Familiarize yourself with the hand signals for biking, they allow you to inform everyone of your next movement.
He notes motorists however, also have a role to play in lowering collisions by being aware of cyclists. There are many older areas in Saskatoon that are busy and don’t have the proper accommodations which forces cyclists onto the street.
McMurchy says, “This time of year with the weather getting nice, people are going to be out on their bicycles a lot more. So the importance of sharing the road both for motorists and for cyclists is paramount.”
