A 39 year old man responsible for a five-vehicle fatal accident was sentenced in Melfort Provincial Court on Wednesday. On August 25th of 2020, RCMP officers responded to a multi-vehicle accident on Highway 41, about 8 kilometres east of Wakaw. Police reported at the time that a semi entered a construction zone, causing four vehicles to be rear-ended in line. Alcohol was not considered to be a factor in the accident.
The 69 year old man who was the only person in the vehicle immediately ahead of the truck was declared dead on scene. Other motorists were either treated on scene or transported to hospital. Gurmeet Singh Cheema was sentenced to 30 months in jail and a five year driving prohibition for the charge of dangerous driving causing death.
His charge of dangerous driving causing bodily harm was stayed.
