The Saskatoon Fire Department is reminding boaters and paddlers to be cautious around the river. Evaluate the weather, your equipment and the water conditions from the shore before taking off, and be informed of changing water currents. The Fire Department notes that watercraft are permitted where posted, and you are required to have proof of competency.
The advice from the Fire Department is to be familiar with boating regulations, and be respectful of other craft on the water. River etiquette includes operating your craft at a safe speed and maintaining a respectful distance from other river users.
For those who would like to swim, there is a city bylaw which prohibits swimming within city limits, although you can wade or walk through the water, unless otherwise posted.
If you happen to see someone in distress in the river, the Fire Department’s advice is to immediately call 911, and note details about the person, the time and the situation. Keep track of recognizable landmarks where the individual was seen in distress and coach them from the shore edge. Tell them to stay calm, keep their head above water, remove any heavy or bulky clothing, and don’t fight the current. Instead move with it and work your way to the shore edge.
