The Water Security Agency is reminding the public to be water conscious this summer.
The organization says the summer heat can cause patches of harmful blue-green algae to appear in lakes and reservoirs. The WSA and the Ministry of Health advise the public to avoid direct contact, intended or unintended consumption of any surface water where blue-green algae blooms are occurring.
Pet owners and livestock producers are also advised to keep their animals away from suspected blooms.
Direct contact or unintended consumption of algae-contaminated water can cause red skin, sore throat, cramps, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. The WSA says if you have any concerns, to consult your health care provider.
