SGI and the Saskatchewan Heavy Construction Association are reminding drivers that if you see orange, slow down. No matter where you are in the province, you will find roadwork, and therefore orange zones, at this time of year. SHCA president Shantel Lipp says, “Every year, we see too many close calls and scary situations.”
SGI spokesperson Tyler McMurchy says slowing down keeps both workers and travelers safe. He notes that over the last five years, the province has had three deaths and 274 injuries from 850 collisions in work zones. The average number of speeding tickets handed out in work zones over the past few years is around 1,400 per year.
Also, McMurchy adds that speeding will drive up the cost of your summer travels. Getting caught going 100 km/h through a construction zone with a posted limit of 60 km/h will cost you just over $1,000 and you will lose at least three Safe Driver Recognition points on your licence, which can lead to further financial penalties or a loss of insurance discounts.
