Starting September 1st, fees for regulated child care will be reduced by 70 per cent in Saskatchewan compared to levels seen in March of 2021.
The fee reduction which is the second one announced this year, is part of close to $1.1 billion dollars which is being invested to transform child care in Saskatchewan.
“With this latest fee reduction, we are one step closer to our goal of $10-a-day child care by 2025-26.” says Education Minister Dustin Duncan. This latest announcement came almost a year, to the day, of Saskatchewan saying it would sign on to the agreement to support an average of $10 a day early learning and child care which is part of the Liberal platform. It includes federal funding to the tune of almost $1.1 billion, over five years in order to achieve the goal by 2025-26.
According to the province, there are approximately 16,000 regulated child care spaces for children under the age of six in Saskatchewan child care homes and centres.
With the September 1 fee reduction, a family of an infant in full-time, regulated child care can expect to pay up to $550 less per month than they paid in January of 2022.
In a news release, the Saskatchewan Government says Child care homes and centres set their own fees, meaning there is a range of fees families may pay. Full time fees will not be reduced to below $200 a month for families.
