SaskPower has completed its review of new federal regulations and decided to proceed with the 350 megawatt Moose Jaw natural gas-fired power station. Minister responsible Dustin Duncan says, “In spite of changing federal regulation, building the gas plant at Moose Jaw remains the most economic choice for SaskPower.” The new federal regulations state that, in order to be exempt from the carbon tax, any natural gas facility coming online after 2021 needs to have zero emissions. A release from SaskPower doesn’t actually say that the company will meet that threshold. When the facility is complete in 2024, SaskPower says it will generate enough baseload power for a city the size of Saskatoon.
