Construction is underway for the Saskatoon Tribal Council’s Rapid Housing Project. This is separate from the emergency shelter planning that is underway.
Local general contractor, 3twenty Modular will design and build the 18-bedroom transitional housing facility at 115 Columbian Place in the Pleasant Hill neighbourhood. A news release from the STC says in keeping with 3twenty’s modular process, it will be built off-site, and will be installed, commissioned and turned over to STC just in time for Christmas this year.
The two-storey building will serve single males, who the STC says are disproportionately represented in the homeless populations. The facility will include a family and cultural space, along with offices and meeting spaces. The 18 units will bolster the current 222 units owned by Cress Housing, which is the affordable housing arm of STC.
STC Tribal Chief Mark Arcand says the extra 18 units means improving the quality of life for more people in Saskatoon. Funding comes from the National Housing Strategy Rapid Housing Initiative delivered by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, along with the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation and the City of Saskatoon.
