The Saskatchewan Advocate for Children and Youth has launched a full investigation into the services and oversight of registered independent schools, after news of alleged abuse at what was the Christian Centre Academy in Saskatoon, now Legacy Christian Academy in Saskatoon. Dr. Lisa Broda has reviewed all information received from the Ministry of Education to date, and has determined a full independent investigation is needed.
She says the magnitude of the allegations of abuse and the number of concerns raised both publicly and through the information gathered through her office has informed her decision, and the issue has been her top priority, and the office’s priority since it came to their attention. She promises no stone will be unturned. The investigation will include an examination of the historical and current services provided to children and youth within the various categories of registered independent schools in Saskatchewan, and the oversight and accountability mechanisms of the Ministry of Education.
The Advocate found out about the allegations through the media, not through the Ministry. She says as soon as she became aware, they contacted the Ministry to ask for information. Dr. Broda says, “It is critical that young people are being educated in environments that respect their inherent dignity and their full range of human rights.”
Caitlin Erickson was one of the first former students to raise concerns, and detail some of the incidents at the former Christian Centre Academy, now Legacy Christian Academy in Lawson Heights. She is pleased to hear the Child Advocate’s office is opening an investigation. Erickson thinks it will be good to get another set of eyes on the whole culture around these types of schools, and is confident the office can provide some insight.
More than 30 students came forward to report physical and mental abuse at these schools. The criminal report is now in the hands of crow prosecutors for a decision on potential charges.
