On Sunday, September 11 the Queen’s coffin, which was previously at the ballroom of Balmoral Castle draped in Standard of Scotland, was driven to the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh. The journey from Balmoral Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse took approximately six hours.
After the Crown of Scotland was placed atop of the coffin during the service, the coffin was placed at St Giles Cathedral so people in Scotland could pay tribute to the Queen.
The coffin was flown from Edinburgh Airport to RAF Northolt on Tuesday September 13, in the company of Princess Anne, the Queen’s daughter (the Princess Royal), before it was driven to Buckingham Palace where it was resting in the Bow Room. Wednesday, the Coffin is taken in Procession on a Gun Carriage of The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery from Buckingham Palace to the Palace of Westminster, where The Queen will Lie-in-State in Westminster Hall until the morning of the State Funeral.
The Procession, which involves members of the Royal family, will travel via Queen’s Gardens, The Mall, Horse Guards and Horse Guards Arch, Whitehall, Parliament Street, Parliament Square and New Palace Yard. After the Coffin arrives at Westminster Hall, The Archbishop of Canterbury will conduct a short service assisted by The Very Reverend Dr. David Hoyle, Dean of Westminster, and attended by The King and Members of the Royal Family, after which the Lying-in-State will begin.
Following the State Funeral, the Coffin will travel in Procession from Westminster Abbey to Wellington Arch. From Wellington Arch, the Coffin will travel to Windsor and once there, the State Hearse will travel in Procession to St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle via the Long Walk. A Committal Service will then take place in St George’s Chapel joining the coffin of Prince Philip, the Queen’s husband for more than 70 years, in an underground crypt which is a temporary measure.
When a tomb is built near the sarcophagus of King George VI and the Queen Mother then they will be permanently at rest, together.
