The Saskatchewan Federation of Labour has launched a petition calling on the Government of Saskatchewan to make September 30th a provincial holiday.
The SFL says the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is an opportunity to reflect on the tragedy of the residential school system , to honour the victims and survivors and to recognize the trauma it created and continues to inflict on families and communities.
SFL president Lori Johb says, “The Saskatchewan Federation of Labour is committed to reconciliation and justice for Indigenous peoples. The provincial government must recognize the role they play in reconciliation and the importance of this day, and legislate September 30th as a provincial holiday.”
The Province of Saskatchewan says the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, will be observed on September 30 But it is not a statutory holiday in Saskatchewan for employees who are not federally regulated.
In 2021 it became a new statutory holiday for employees in federally regulated workplaces or those who have a collective bargaining agreement that identifies they will observe federal statutory holidays.
