Battlefords RCMP have been fielding a number of calls about a Canada Revenue Agency tax scam. The police are asking those who have been scammed to report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
The message from the RCMP is that the CRA will not call and threaten you to pay a tax debt, and will not contact you to tell you about a warrant for your arrest. The CRA won’t request you pay this supposed debt using crypto currencies such as Bitcoin, or gift cards and money transfers. The tax agency will not have you deported if you don’t pay this debt, and if you suspect the call is a scam, hang up the phone.
Nationally, the RCMP and Anti-Fraud Centre have been working with international partners to disrupt and dismantle the illegal call centre network in India. Between September of last year and this past January, 40 call centres were closed and 60 people were arrested. RCMP say the scams are being committed by organized crime groups operating out of multiple locations in India.
