Since 1998, the last Sunday in September has become known as Police and Peace Officers’ National Memorial Day. The Solicitor General said at the time that this gives Canadians an opportunity to formally express appreciation for the dedication of Police and Peace Officers, who make the ultimate, tragic sacrifice to keep communities safe.
Since 2004, Saskatchewan Police and Peace Officers have been recognizing the day with a parade and ceremony in Regina and yesterday (Sun) was no exception. The Parade of Officers began at the Royal Saskatchewan Museum and marched to the Legislative Building, where there was a Wreath Laying Ceremony.
This was the seventh year for the Ride to Remember for officers cycling to Regina from Saskatoon. It began Thursday morning at Saskatoon Police Headquarters, with officers cycling a total of 447 kilometres with stops along the way and then arriving in Regina on Sunday.
