SGI announced that tougher penalties will be implemented in Saskatchewan to keep drivers safe. The rules are part of SGI’s October spotlight on speed while promoting safe driving.
Starting October 1, drivers caught stunting will pay a fine of $580 with four demerits. Street racers will have to face the same fine (with escalating fines for street racing) as well as a 30 day impoundment which was already in effect. The registered owner has to pay for the tow and the impoundment.
Chief operating officer of SGI fund JP Cullen says “The faster you travel, the more serious the consequences are when you crash. Positive choices, like slowing down, help keep you, and others safe.”
Excessive speed is one of the leading causes of death on the road in Saskatchewan. In 2021, there were 1,263 collisions resulting in 554 injuries and 20 deaths.
During October police across the province will also be on the lookout for drivers engaging in excessive speeding offences under The Traffic Safety Act:
- exceeding the limit by more than 35 km/h;
- exceeding the limit by more than 50 km/h
- exceeding the limit in a school zone;
- exceeding 60 km/h while passing highway workers; and
- exceeding 60 km/h when passing an emergency vehicle or tow truck at roadside with lights flashing.
