The province announced in the summer it was withdrawing its funding from The Lighthouse Supported Living and questions remained about where those residing at The Lighthouse were going to go.
The government has announced that this month 30 of the 61 emergency shelter spaces at The Lighthouse are transitioning to Salvation Army through an existing contract with the Ministry of Social Services. And discussions are underway with other community partners in order to transition, in the coming weeks, the remaining 31 emergency shelter spaces.
The government says it made the decision to remove funding following challenges with governance, management and financial controls, and safety concerns due to the concentration of services in one location.
In a news release the minister responsible, Gene Makowsky, says, “A gradual reduction of new referrals to Lighthouse will occur as emergency shelter spaces become operational and with client needs in mind.”
