The Health Critic for the Saskatchewan N-D-P says the probe into the death of a Saskatoon patient in an emergency unit needs an independent set of eyes.
Vick Mowat has called on the Health Minister to ask for a Coroners’ inquest.
The M-L-A for Saskatoon Fairview feels the inquest is needed in the wake of a hospital staff member indicating the patient died because of treatment delays.
Mowat also says it came at a time when the Saskatchewan Health Authority was describing a state of extreme overcapacity in emergency units.
Health Minister Jim Reiter says while not diminishing the patient’s death or the overcapacity problem, the critical incident report concluded it wasn’t due to care the patient received.
Reiter told the legislature ministry officials have the report and there will be a meeting between the Coroner and Minister of Justice.
The Health Minister says it would be up to them to decide if an inquest is necessary.
