RCMP have requested an independent, external investigation into an incident early Saturday morning on the Little Pine First Nation—a couple of hours northwest of Saskatoon.
A 49-year-old man from the Little Pine First Nation received minor injuries in an RCMP involved shooting.
Cut Knife RCMP received three calls from the Little Pine First Nation between midnight and 1:30am Saturday. One was a report of an assault; the second was a firearm pointed at Little Pine Security Members and the third was an abandoned 911 call from a man with a firearm thinking about suicide.
Just before 2am, two Cut Knife RCMP officers encountered the man outside a residence. The police response involved the discharge of a firearm and the man was injured. He was taken to hospital where he was treated and released into RCMP custody.
The Saskatoon Police Service and the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team will conduct an investigation at the request of the RCMP. Independent investigation observers, including one indigenous representative, will be appointed as well.
