Regina appears to be following in the wake of Saskatoon after their city council executive committee voted to move garbage, recycling and yard waste services to a user pay model. If approved their fees would be charged to utility bills in 2024 and the committee is proposing a three-bin system, the same as that which was adopted last month in Saskatoon,
At the September 27th Saskatoon Council meeting, councillors voted for three different sizes when the garbage system moves to being a utility as opposed to part of your property taxes. A system involving two different sizes was also be considered.
The largest cart at 360 litres is the same size as the cart Saskatoon residents already have.
Council voted 8-2 in favour of the move, but Councillors Darren Hill and Troy Davies were opposed.
The new small and medium carts for Saskatoon will cost more than $4 million to purchase.
