A rally in Saskatoon today is one of many that have been organized across the world to support the freedom movement in Iran, and in condemnation of the Iranian government’s brutality in killing and arresting protesters. Saskatoon organizers are inviting everyone to join them at noon at College Drive and Wiggins at noon. They will head across the bridge and the march will end at City Hall.
On September 16th, a 22-year-old Iranian woman, Mahsa Amini died in a hospital in Tehran under suspicious circumstances. Media reports say Amini was arrested for wearing not wearing the hijab, and the official report is that she before being transferred to a hospital, she had a heart attack at a police station and collapsed, and then fell into a coma, before dying. But, witnesses, including women who were detained with her say she was severely beaten and that’s why she died.
A few days after her death, the United Nations stated that authorities in Iran must respect the rights of protestors calling for justice for Mahsa Amini. The Saskatoon Iranian Cultural Association has organized today’s rally and says Saskatoon Mayor Charlie Clark as well as some city officials, including the Chief of Police, will be attending the rally, today. The march in Saskatoon is a part of the events planned worldwide for Saturday, in support of women in Iran.
The Norway-based Iran Human Rights organization cited earlier this month that at least 200 civilians had died during the protests and riots.
