At the Saskatchewan Medical Associations Fall Representative Assembly, which continues today (Sat) in Regina, Dr. Pieter Maree of Hudson Bay was announced as the Physician of the Year. He is a family physician in Hudson Bay, and says he was completely surprised when he found out because his colleagues kept the nomination a well-guarded secret.
One of his nominees wrote that he has been a valuable member of the community for more than 20 years. “I have witnessed him come to the hospital to do elective procedures for patients and do house calls for palliative patients during his time off work. I have seen him go to extraordinary lengths to help vulnerable families in difficult situations.” When not working or on call, Dr. Maree spends his free time on his sheep farm. He works with local farmers to assist them and in turn to learn traditional farming techniques. He is described as a community builder who also encourages children and youth in organizations such as 4-H.
