In mid-October Meewasin hosted Canada’s first Prescribed Fire Training Exchange (TREX) with 40 participants from across Canada and into the United States. Four of the five days had favourable conditions for a prescribed burn, which saw over 240 acres burned in total at the Northeast Swale, Beaver Creek Conservation Area, Wanuskewin, St. Denis National Wildlife Area and Kernan Prairie Research Farm.
In a news release, Meewasin says prescribed fires cat these areas contribute to the ecological goals of reactivating sand dunes, prairie restoration, reducing litter and fuel load, and protecting habitat for endangered species. Resource Management Officer, Renny Grilz, says the training and networking from this exchange will serve those who participated and the environment as we all work to halt and reverse the loss of important biodiversity and specifically those of native prairie grassland. He adds that the work is also integral to Meewasin’s goal to annually enhance and/or restore no less that 25 per cent of its property.
