The Northern Lights were putting on a show last night and early this morning (Sunday) in Saskatchewan and it has been a very active fall for the Aurora Borealis.
There is a Facebook group dedicated to sightings of the often elusive light show. Dale Boan administrates the group and is himself an Aurora Hunter.
He says he was recently in Banff and came across some American visitors from Tennessee and Mississippi who had flown in specifically to see the northern lights.
“There are certainly people travel all over the world trying to catch them and I think we see a lot of new Canadians, it’s something they really, really want to see ’cause they may have moved from an area where you can’t see them and it’s something much more common in Canada. They’re often very enthusiastic about going out and seeing them and photographing them.”
Boan says there are two mechanisms that cause aurora. One is a CME which is associated with solar flares from sunspots that tend to produce fairly strong aurora but for shorter period and the other is the coronal hole.
The group is called Saskatchewan Aurora Hunters and this morning is full of photographs of nature’s light show from last night.
