The world needs food and will need about twice as much by 2050 because the amount of arable land is not increasing while the world’s population is. The forecast is to reach 10-billion people by 2050. That from Nutrien’s President and CEO Ken Seitz who says right now, fertilizers help about 50 per cent of the world’s crop yields.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine shines a light on global food security challenges, so Nutrien is increasing its potash production from 13-million tonnes produced a few years ago to 18-million tonnes by 2025. That will take a $600-million investment from Nutrien and an extra 350 jobs.
Seitz adds that their new state-of-the art building in downtown Saskatoon generated about $70-million in local economic output, creating 295 jobs and over $20-million in employment income.
