Statistics Canada’s employment report for October indicates there were 108,000 more jobs across the country, recouping losses from May through September. Prince Edward Island topped the list with the highest rise in job numbers, followed by Saskatchewan with an extra 6,100 jobs following six consecutive months of little change. The province says in a news release that comparing October of this year to last year, there were an extra 18,600 jobs created.
The Official Opposition’s take is that although it is good to see more jobs, the growth hasn’t been sustained. NDP Critic for Jobs and the Economy, Aleana Young says in the decade that ended in October, Saskatchewan trailed all but one province in terms of full-time job growth. During that time, the national full-time job growth rate was 13.3 per cent, while in Saskatchewan it was 3.6 per cent. Young adds that in the past decade, the province lost 1,200 healthcare and social assistance jobs.
The provincial government notes there were records set in October. The list is below:
Off-reserve Indigenous Employment: 62,700
Off-reserve Indigenous Full-time Employment: 52,000
Saskatchewan Employment: 581,400
Saskatchewan Full-Time Employment: 477,800
Saskatchewan Female Employment: 273,600
