An RCMP officer at Indian Head calls it the largest seizure of contraband cigarettes he has ever seen.
A semi-trailer was searched on Highway #1, just east of Indian Head early last Thursday afternoon. Inside were 5.4 million unstamped cigarettes and 1,356 kilograms of shisha tobacco. There were also 18 pallets, each containing 30 boxes of unstamped tobacco.
Contraband tobacco hurts local businesses selling the legal product and denies Saskatchewan the tax revenue. The manufacture and trafficking of contraband tobacco is also usually tied to organized gangs.
Two men from Hamilton Ontario face several charges. Thirty-four year old Sargon Jahn and 35-year old Berj Antaneek are scheduled to appear in Indian Head provincial court on January 3rd.
