According to a Leger survey commissioned by the Tire and Rubber Association of Canada, 76 per cent of motorists say having winter tires has saved them from a road accident or injury, and 82 per cent of Canada’s drivers believe investing in winter tires is important, despite steep increases in the cost of living.
Other than Quebec, where winter tires are the law, winter tire usage in Canada is at 63 per cent, which is a three per cent increase from a similar study in 2017.
In Saskatchewan, the survey’s results show 61 per cent of drivers have winter tires. The lowest percentage is Manitoba at 54 per cent followed by Alberta at 56 per cent.
For those who have chosen not to have winter tires, 57 per cent believe their all-season tires are good enough, 26 per cent say it’s the cost and 25 per cent said they don’t drive as much in the winter.
