Your category choices to vote for names for 5 young bulls being introduced to Nature Conservancy of Canada’s Plains Bison herd in southwest Saskatchewan are outlaw country singers, New Kids on the Block, action movie stars or Looney Tunes characters.
NCC Program Director for the Old Man On His Back Prairie and Heritage Conservation Area, Michael Burak, says they took over the property in 1996 and it was the vision of the previous owners that bison be returned to the prairie landscape. In 2003, NCC introduced 50 Plains Bison to the property, and now 5 bulls are being added to the herd to increase its genetic diversity.
The bison have 9-thousand acres to roam and the remaining 4-thousand acres is grazed by cattle from neighbouring landowners. Burak muses that it’s kind of a snapshot in time when you see bison on one side of the road and then a more up-t-date version on the north side.
The deadline for voting is the end of Wednesday.
