Whether it was because they didn’t play their best or played down to the opposition’s level, but the Saskatoon Blades did more than enough to overcome a pesky Oil Kings’ squad 5-1 Wednesday night in Edmonton.
The result was the Oil Kings’ fourth straight loss and dropped their record to 4-21-1, but the Bridge City Bunch needed almost nine minutes before recording their first shot on goal. However, Vaughn Watterodt (pictured) continued his scoring tear of recent, potting the game’s first goal and adding a second, giving the 18-year-old Rosetown product seven for the season and six in the last six games. In between, defenceman Tanner Molendyk’s first goal of the season turned out to be the winning goal for the 17-5-0 Blue and Gold. Brandon Lisowsky and Jayden Wiens added third period markers as the Blades out-shot Edmonton 24-11. The only blemish for goaltender Austin Elliott was a second period goal by the Oil Kings’ Rhett Melnyk. Saskatoon continues their three-game Alberta road trip Friday against the Rebels in Red Deer. CJWW’s broadcast starts at 7:45 p.m. and the play-by-play at 8 o’clock. Following is the official game summary courtesy the W-H-L, the audio highlights from CJWW’s broadcast and Les Lazaruk’s Post-Game Show interview with head coach Brennan Sonne…..
