The Greater Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce is concerned about Air Canada’s decision to drop direct flights between Saskatchewan and Calgary. This is to start January 16th. The Chamber’s CEO Jason Aebig says the decision has major consequences for businesses and institutions headquartered in Saskatoon.

As the region’s largest hub, Calgary has played a vital role helping Saskatoon business travelers reach their domestic and international customers and clients. He believes the decision was abrupt and short-sighted, considering that loads and passenger yields have been so strong on these routes. Aebig hopes Air Canada will revisit the decision, and that’s why The Chamber has prepared a template letter for anyone who would like to send a response to Air Canada executives. It includes all relevant email addresses and includes the business case as to why this was the wrong decision. It has been sent out to all of The Chamber’s members. Right now, West Jet has six daily flights to and from Calgary and Air Canada has two. Flair Airlines announced on Thursday it would begin new daily service to and from Calgary beginning May 9th with one-way fares including taxes and fees beginning at $49. Garth Lund, Chief Commercial Officer for Flair says, “We know how important it is for Saskatoon to be connected to Calgary.”

Aebig says competition is the key to keeping the prices reasonable.
