Eight teens in Toronto have been arrested and charged with second degree murder after a 59-year-old man who was living in a shelter was assaulted and stabbed by what police say was a group of teenage girls.

At 12:17 a.m. on Sunday the victim was rushed to hospital with life threatening injuries where he was pronounced deceased a short time later.

Three 13-year-old girls, three 14-year-old girls and two 16-year-old girls were arrested nearby and are in custody until their next court appearance December 29.

They believe the same group of eight young women were in an earlier altercation in the same area.

Detective Sergeant Terry Browne says what their investigation has indicated so far was that they girls are from various areas of Toronto, they met through social media. Police say they don’t consider them as a gang and the incident which occurred is being described as a swarming. A number of weapons were secured by police as well when the accused were arrested.
