Saskatchewan had its fair share of weather events in David Phillip’s top ten list for 2022.

Environment Canada’s Chief Climatologist has been compiling the annual list for many years.

The number nine story was record breaking cold in our province at the end of 2021 and into early 2022.

The highest number of tornadoes in Saskatchewan in a decade comes in at number seven. Phillips says there were two dozen tornadoes in June and July, with five on June 29th at locations such as Manitou Beach and Foam Lake.

Parts of eastern Saskatchewan as well as Manitoba were impacted by a very wet spring that delayed seeding making it the number three story.

Number two was the very strong windstorms that hit southern Ontario and Quebec in May. The storm killed 11 people and caused over one billion dollars in damage.

The top weather story of the year was Hurricane Fiona during the final week of September. Even though the storm was downgraded to a tropical depression by the time it hit Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland, winds still reached 165 kilometres per hour. It was one of the strongest storms ever recorded in Canada and caused considerable damage from storm surges and heavy rain.
