Officers with the Swift Current Municipal RCMP along with the Critical Incident Response team arrested a suspect at an apartment building in the southwest Saskatchewan city Thursday in connect to a woman being attacked.

Police were called when a woman managed to leave the apartment building which is when the male suspect allegedly approached her and threatened her with a firearm and machete. He went back to the apartment, and she contacted police.

The woman was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, a search warrant was executed at the apartment and officers seized an imitation firearm, a machete and a small amount of suspected fentanyl.

Derek Ruest, 34 years old, from Swift Current is in court today facing a variety of weapons charges as well as assault, sexual assault and overcoming resistance to the commit an indictable offence.
