Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Canada is sending more military equipment to Ukraine because the government is committed to supporting the Ukrainian people as they defend themselves against Russia’s brutal invasion.
Thursday, Canada’s Defence Minister announced that in response to Ukraine’s urgent request for tanks, Canada is sending four combat-ready Leopard 2 main battle tanks to Ukraine in the coming weeks. This announcement also includes ammunition, spare parts, and the deployment of Canadian Forces trainers.
Anita Anand says Leopard 2 main battle tanks will significantly assist Ukraine’s efforts to defend itself. She says the heavily armoured and highly protected vehicles provide soldiers with a tactical advantage on the battlefield, thanks to their mobility, firepower, and survivability.
Anand also said the donation is the result of extensive coordination with Allies and partners who are also donating Western battle tanks.
