The author of the new book “Leave My Bones in Saskatoon” doesn’t want to give too much away, but says the title is about having allegiances to two countries when you are a newcomer.  Michael Afenfia and his family moved to Saskatoon from Nigeria in 2019.  Leave My Bones in Saskatoon is his sixth novel.

It’s fiction, but some of his experiences as an immigrant and newcomer are included.  The story begins in Nigeria and gives some history of why the family of four decide to move to Canada, and then goes on to include the experiences the family of four have as they try to adapt to their new home, including dealing with culture shock and a different climate, integrating the kids into the school system, learning about Indigenous cultures and looking for work.

Afenfia was a lawyer in Nigeria and now he is the executive director of the Saskatchewan Association of Immigrant Settlement Integration Agencies, as well as being a writer. He became a Canadian citizen earlier this month (Feb). Leave My Bones in Saskatoon will be released across Canada and the U.S. on April 1st.
