This weekend a performance by the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra along with the Greystone Singers and Aurora Voce will try to convey the power of the phenomenon that is the Northern Lights.

Nicolas Ellis is the conductor and says the composer created the textures that he feels captured the beauty and the mystery that goes with the Northern Lights.

He says it is an ambitious project.

“In terms of the number of musicians on stage, the choir, the fact that there is going to be some projections. Some songs, pre-recorded songs that will be synchronized with the orchestra playing live. So, we have pre-recorded stuff that we have to synchronize with live music so all that does require a lot of coordination and planning in advance.”

Ellis says the music itself is relatively simple and is music that has lots of space which creates the right atmosphere to take the audience on a beautiful voyage that they can experience the Northern Lights in a musical way.

Ellis says the choir, made up of the Greystone Singers and Aurora Voce will do one piece that is A cappella.

“And we are doing this other piece which is written for orchestra and choir by Eriks Esenvalds. It’s called Nordic Lights and this comes with projections and tells the story of Indigenous people and First Nations all with themes around legends and the theme of Nordic Lights.”

Choral Conductor Jennifer Lang says it is incredibly powerful sonically and visually. The performance includes video projections, story, choir and orchestra.  Nordic Light will take to the stage at TCU Place Saturday night.
