The Saskatoon Blades continue to nip potential losing streaks in the bud in the 2022-23 W-H-L season – the latest bounce back effort coming in Wednesday’s 3-2 triumph over the Broncos in Swift Current.
Coming off their most lop-sided loss of the campaign Sunday in an 8-1 home setback to the arch-rival Prince Albert Raiders, the Bridge City Bunch shook off allowing the game’s opening goal to take over with opportunistic scoring, stout defence and stellar netminding from Austin Elliott (pictured) when needed. Elliott made 29 saves, 15 of them in the third period as the desperate Broncos attempted to come back from a 3-1 deficit after 40 minutes. But, the Blue and Gold held firm and shut things down to record their eighth consecutive road win and improve their overall record to 45-14-5. In addition, the Blades are 7-3-2 in games played following an initial loss. Saskatoon’s leading point-scorer, Trevor Wong, was in on all three Bridge City Bunch goals – scoring once and adding assists on tallies by defencemen Aidan De La Gorgendiere and Tanner Molendyk. The helpers give Wong 100 for his W-H-L career while De La Gorgendiere’s goal gives him 152 career points, all with the Blue and Gold. He’s three points back of Wendel Clark for 10th spot on the all-time Blades’ defenceman scoring list. The Blades are one win or one Red Deer loss away from insuring Saskatoon finishes ahead of the Rebels for the second-best record in the Eastern Conference. For the Broncos, the loss extended their winless streak to five games (0-4-1), leaving them two points behind Calgary for the eighth and final playoff spot in the East. The Blades are off until a Sunday home game against Brandon. Here is the official game summary from the W-H-L.
